Mengjun Hu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture at the University of Maryland, College Park, within the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. He specializes in plant pathology with statewide extension responsibilities for wine grape and small fruit disease management.
- Education: PhD in Plant Pathology (Huazhong Agricultural University, 2013); BS in Plant Protection (China Agricultural University, 2008)
- Professional Background: Postdoctoral Research Associate at Clemson University (2013-2018); Assistant Professor at University of Maryland (2018-2024)
His research focuses on fungicide resistance mechanisms and disease epidemiology in fungal pathogens like Botrytis and Colletotrichum species. Key areas include fitness costs of resistance mutations, grapevine canopy management impacts on disease risk, and microbiome interactions in fruit rot dynamics. Extension programs involve validating disease forecasting models, developing IPM apps, and monitoring fungicide resistance.
Recent publications highlight his work on azoxystrobin resistance, CRISPR-enabled genetic analysis, and precision disease control strategies. Awards include the New Innovator in Food and Agriculture Research (2020) and Dean’s Grantsmanship Award (2024). He holds a Maryland Pesticide Applicator License and serves as Senior Editor for Plant Disease Journal.
