Mendell Rimer, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neuroscience & Experimental Therapeutics at Texas A&M University's School of Medicine. His research focuses on molecular and cellular mechanisms of synapse formation, maintenance, and pathology using the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) as a model system. He employs mouse molecular genetics combined with molecular, cellular, and immunological techniques.
- Education:
- BS in Biology, Universidad de Los Andes
- PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology (with Pharmacology minor), University of Maryland, Baltimore
- Postdoctoral Training: Neurobiology and Molecular Genetics at Stanford University & New York University
Research interests include synaptic plasticity, neuromuscular junction pathology in neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., ALS, Duchenne muscular dystrophy), and signaling pathways involving MAP kinases and neuregulins. His work combines genetic models with advanced imaging and molecular biology techniques.
Publications span synaptic development, neuromuscular disorders, and signaling mechanisms. Notable work includes studies on lymphatic dysfunction in ALS models and roles of ERK kinases in muscle maintenance. Active in graduate training through the Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience and Medical Science PhD program.
Labs/Teams: The Rimer Lab focuses on integrative approaches to neuromuscular synapse biology. Collaborations involve clinical translation of synaptic repair mechanisms in neurodegenerative diseases.
