Melvyn Stokes is a Professor of Film History at University College London's Department of History. He directs the AHRC-funded 'Remembering British Cinema-going of the 1960s' project and has held visiting roles at Princeton, Mount Holyoke College, and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. His research focuses on film audiences, cinema reception, and American cultural history, particularly Progressivism's intellectual dimensions.
Education:
- Bachelor of Arts (Honours), University of Oxford, 1969.
Research Interests: Stokes explores movie audience dynamics, cultural memory in cinema history, and American cinema's intersection with political and social movements. He co-edited five books on audiences and organized major conferences on the topic. His work bridges film studies with historical and sociological analysis.
