Melvyn B. Davies is a Professor of Astronomy at Lund University's Centre for Mathematical Sciences, affiliated with the Faculty of Sciences. He holds roles as Principal Investigator for the eSSENCE Strategic Research Area and Assistant Coordinator for the LU Profile Area: Natural and Artificial Cognition. His research focuses on three core questions: the prevalence of habitable planetary systems, black hole formation and interaction, and the mechanisms behind the Universe's most energetic explosions.
Research Interests:
- Exoplanetary Systems: Studying habitable zones and planetary formation through missions like PLATO and CHEOPS.
- Black Hole Dynamics: Investigating their growth and interactions with cosmic environments.
- Gamma Ray Bursts: Exploring the astrophysical processes powering these extreme events.
Recent work includes analyzing planetary atmospheres (e.g., WASP-76b) and debris disc formation via planet-planet scattering. He coordinates e-science initiatives and collaborates globally, contributing to projects like the Swedish LISA contribution and the Great Observatory Origins Deep Survey (GREAT).
Advising & Grants: Supervises students like G. Kokaia (habitable planetary systems) and E. Andersson (galaxy formation). Active in funding programs such as the Swedish National Space Agency-supported projects.
