Melvin Tay

Melvin Tay is a conductor and researcher at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), focusing on re-realising opera through arrangements for chamber ensembles to enhance accessibility for performers and audiences. He has worked with orchestras such as the BBC Philharmonic and Northern Ballet Sinfonia, and served as Assistant Conductor under notable figures like Vasily Petrenko. Currently, he is the music director of Opera Viva.

• Awards: Special Prize at the 2nd International Conducting Competition in Brescia.

His research emphasizes practical solutions for logistical and financial challenges in opera performance, aiming to democratize access to the art form. Collaborations with ensembles like the Northern Film Orchestra and brass bands highlight his versatility in orchestrating diverse performances.
