Dr. Melissa Morgan is a Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign's College of Education. Her research focuses on multicultural social justice counseling, resilience in marginalized communities, and the impacts of systemic oppression on mental health. She holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Loyola University Chicago, an M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Stephen F. Austin State University, and a B.A. in Psychology from Southwestern University.
Her scholarship examines:
- Resilience mechanisms in Latinx communities during crises
- Intersections of racial injustice and public health emergencies
- Culturally responsive pedagogy in diversity education
- Trauma recovery frameworks for underrepresented student populations
- Cross-cultural manifestations of thriving amid discrimination
Publication analysis reveals three dominant themes: 1) Cultural resilience models during the COVID-19 pandemic, 2) Identity development in Latinx educational contexts, and 3) Decolonized approaches to trauma recovery. Her work consistently integrates community-engaged methodologies with critical theoretical frameworks.

She developed and teaches EPSY 202: Exploring Cultural Diversity, a course integrating experiential learning with critical analysis of social oppression. Her research lab focuses on community-based interventions promoting educational equity.
