Melissa Gilbert Gomes, PhD, APRN, PMHNP-BC, FAAN, FNAP, is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean leading the Office of Strategic Wellness and Opportunity at the University of Virginia School of Nursing. She also serves as the psychiatric-mental health nursing specialty lead. Previously, she held roles at Hampton University School of Nursing as an Associate Professor and interim chair of graduate studies. Her certifications include Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC).
Dr. Gomes earned a post-master’s certificate in psychiatric mental health nursing from UVA and completed an NRSA T-32-funded post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Health Equity. Her research focuses on healthcare disparities, violence, women’s health, and HIV/AIDS awareness among teenagers, supported by NIH, NINR, and NCI grants.
She has secured over $670,000 in grants through her initiatives like the ETHOS project, which piloted alternatives to school suspensions for at-risk youth. Awards include induction into the American Academy of Nursing (2021) and the Hampton University Nursing Research Award. She actively contributes to national committees such as the American Academy of Nursing’s mental health working group and the Virginia Nurses Association’s cultural competence committee.
Dr. Gomes has taught at multiple institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania, Old Dominion University, and VCU, and maintained clinical roles at facilities like Johns Hopkins Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania. Her mentorship focuses on supporting underrepresented nursing students.
