Dr. Melissa D Harlan serves as an Associate Professor in the Acute & Tertiary Care Department at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. With 16 years of nursing experience and 9 years in nursing education, she is an adult health clinical nurse specialist (ACNS-BC) and Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE). Her clinical background includes professional staff nurse, charge nurse, and preceptor roles for nursing students and graduate nurses.
Dr. Harlan's clinical expertise centers on orthopedic, trauma, and surgical nursing. Her scholarly work emphasizes quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and the development of mentorship programs. She investigates the reciprocal benefits of mentorship for both mentors and mentees, aiming to improve patient care quality and safety through evidence-based practice and professional development.
In teaching, Dr. Harlan instructs clinical courses for traditional and accelerated BSN students from sophomore through senior levels. She co-teaches the first-term sophomore clinical course, facilitates simulation activities for sophomores, and guest lectures in senior seminars and medical-surgical courses. She mentors students and serves as Mentorship Program Coordinator for the Sigma Eta Chapter.
