Melissa Burch is an Associate Professor of Cognitive Development at Hampshire College. Her work bridges psychology, cognitive science, and educational research, focusing on memory formation, emotional influences on recall, and cross-cultural differences in autobiographical memory. She earned her B.A. in psychology from Franklin and Marshall College and her Ph.D. in child development with a minor in interpersonal relationships from the University of Minnesota.
Her research examines how parental verbal support and cultural socialization shape children’s memory for personal experiences, integrating developmental and sociocultural perspectives. She has designed courses on early literacy, cognitive development, and memory’s role in identity formation.
Recent courses include explorations of autobiographical memory’s link to emotion and identity, with keywords spanning psychology, memory, and narrative. She emphasizes methodological rigor in studying children’s cognitive processes and real-world applications of developmental theories.
