Melissa Bailes is an Associate Professor of English at Tulane University, affiliated with the School of Liberal Arts and the Stone Center for Latin American Studies. Her research focuses on British literature of the long eighteenth century, transatlantic studies, the history of science, and gender and colonialism. She holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (2012) and a B.A. in English and History from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (2001).
Her scholarship explores intersections between literature, science, and empire, with notable works including Questioning Nature (2017) and Regenerating Romanticism (2023). She has received prestigious fellowships from institutions like the National Humanities Center and the Huntington Library. Bailes teaches courses such as The Nature and Culture of 18th Century Science and chairs Tulane’s Environmental Studies Program Faculty Advisory Committee.
