Dr. Boyd's research pioneers feminist musicology through rigorous examination of women composers and performers across the 19th-20th centuries. She investigates intersections of gender, power, and musical expression in opera, popular music, and political movements. Her scholarly approach integrates cultural studies, aesthetics, and critical theory to analyze how music both reflects and shapes societal structures, particularly regarding protest, social justice, and identity politics within American musical traditions.
Her publication trajectory reveals a sustained commitment to amplifying marginalized voices in music history. The 2019 monograph provides groundbreaking analysis of three overlooked opera composers, while the 2012 article deconstructs racial politics in a landmark American musical adaptation. The co-authored 2010 reference work remains foundational for gender studies in music, establishing methodological frameworks that continue to shape research in feminist musicology and historical recovery projects.
