Dr Melanie Selfe is a Lecturer in Cultural Policy at the University of Glasgow's Department of Theatre, Film & Television Studies, affiliated with the Centre for Cultural Policy Research (CCPR). She serves as Course Director for the MSc in Creative Industries and Cultural Policy and teaches core courses on Cultural Policy and Audience Management. Her research focuses on cultural policy infrastructure, film criticism history, and creative sector dynamics, with expertise in archival work and audience ethnography.
Education: BA (First Class) in Film & TV Studies from Aberystwyth University (2002), MA (Distinction) in Film Studies from Nottingham (2003), and a PhD from UEA on film societies in post-war Nottingham (2006). She conducted research on audience responses to sexual violence in cinema (2006-2007) and joined CCPR as an RCUK Fellow in 2007, becoming a Lecturer in 2011.
Key research areas include regional variations in creative policy, film criticism's role in shaping audience taste, and historical studies of Hollywood marketing. She co-authored Curators of Cultural Enterprise (2015) analyzing creative business support in Scotland. Current projects explore mid-century film critics as cultural figures and product placement aesthetics in 1930s Hollywood.
Grants include a Royal Society of Edinburgh grant (2018) for screen policy workshops and a Carnegie Trust award (2009) for archival film criticism studies. She supervises PhD students on topics like social media impact in China and Scotland's craft sector resilience.
Teaching responsibilities include core modules on creative industries policy and advanced audience management strategies. She actively participates in international conferences, presenting on topics ranging from digital audience measurement to national cinema policies.
