Melanie Schulze Tanielian is an Associate Professor in the History Department at the University of Michigan and Director of the Program in International and Comparative Studies. She holds affiliations with multiple institutes including the Center for Armenian Studies, Center for Middle Eastern & North African Studies, and Donia Human Rights Center. Her research focuses on war's societal impacts, humanitarianism, and Middle Eastern history, particularly during World War I.
Education: PhD in History from University of California-Berkeley (2012). Key works include *The Charity of War* (2017), analyzing Ottoman relief efforts during WWI, and ongoing projects on German humanitarianism, transnational lunacy in wartime, and Armenian Genocide representations. Supported by ACLS and NEH grants, her research bridges historical analysis with contemporary humanitarian challenges.
Publications span monographs, journal articles, and encyclopedia entries addressing famine management, disease, and wartime philanthropy in the Middle East. Current projects include a Cambridge Press book on German humanitarianism and a study on madness during WWI. She actively engages in interdisciplinary collaborations through her directorship roles.
