Melanie Kirmess is an Associate Professor at the University of Oslo's Department of Special Education. She serves as Dean of Studies at the Faculty of Educational Sciences and leads research projects on communication disorders and rehabilitation technologies.
Research centers on aphasia rehabilitation, telelogopedics, speech apraxia, social communication disorders, and stuttering therapy. Her work bridges clinical practice and technological innovation in speech-language pathology.
Current projects include the Early Stuttering Treatment (EST) initiative and translation of diagnostic tools for speech apraxia. Publications demonstrate strong focus on evidence-based interventions for communication disorders, particularly emphasizing randomized trials and implementation science.
Actively supervises doctoral candidates investigating parental report instruments and group-based treatments. Collaborates extensively with Sunnaas Rehabilitation Hospital on telemedicine applications.
Leads the TeleLogopedics project investigating video consultation for aphasia treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Serves on the Competence Group for Aphasia at Sunnaas Hospital.
