Melanie Coughlin

Melanie Coughlin is Jointly Appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Religious Studies and Department of Philosophy at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Her research bridges East Asian and Western philosophical traditions with contemporary social philosophy.

Her scholarship focuses on Japanese Buddhist philosophy (particularly the Kyoto School), German philosophical traditions, and applications to critical disability and feminist theory. Current projects include translating works by Keta Masako (first woman member of the Kyoto School) and developing a monograph on Nishitani Keiji's critique of anthropocentrism.

Her publications appear in Journal of Nietzsche Studies, Philosophy East & West, and Studies in Religion/Sciences Religieuses. Research integrates historical analysis with contemporary social justice frameworks to examine anthropocentrism, ethical responsibility, and marginalized perspectives.
