Professor Mehul Malik holds the Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies and professorships in Physics at Heriot-Watt University and the Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences. He directs the Beyond Binary Quantum Information Laboratory (BBQ Lab), investigating quantum information processing in space and time dimensions using photons. His ERC-funded research focuses on high-dimensional entanglement and its transport through complex media.
Major achievements include creating the first three-particle high-dimensional entanglement, developing efficient entanglement certification methods, and demonstrating noise-robust quantum steering. His work on 'unscrambling entanglement' through scattering media was featured in Nature Physics and covered by 145 news outlets globally. Current projects explore quantum networks using structured light and superconducting nanowire detectors.
Professor Malik serves on the Organization for Computational Neurosciences board and as Optica Associate Editor. Honors include the 2024 UK Blavatnik Award, 2023 International Quantum Technology Early Career Award, and RSE Thomas Makdougall Brisbane Medal. He mentors PhD students and postdoctoral researchers while advocating for gender diversity in physics.
