Mehr Un Nisa is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University (MSU), part of the College of Natural Science. She leads research in particle astrophysics, focusing on neutrino and gamma-ray astronomy, particularly in multimessenger searches for astrophysical neutrinos and constraints on dark matter. Her work leverages collaborations with major facilities like the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, HAWC Gamma-ray Observatory, Southern Wide-field Gamma-ray Observatory (SWGO), and the Pacific Ocean Neutrino Experiment (P-ONE).
She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in 2018 and joined MSU as a postdoc in 2019 before becoming faculty in 2023. Her research group develops tools to enhance sensitivity in point-source searches, cross-correlates very-high-energy gamma-ray data with neutrinos, and employs machine learning for directional reconstruction. Projects include studying diffuse neutrino emission from the galactic plane, dark matter annihilation in dwarf spheroidal galaxies, and optimizing source-search techniques for water-Cherenkov telescopes. Recent work identified ultra-high-energy gamma-ray bubbles around microquasars and tested molecular cloud paradigms for gamma-ray emission.
Her contributions span over 390 publications, with recent focus on IceCube framework development (GollumFit), SWGO prospects, and neutrino oscillation studies. Collaborations include HAWC, IceCube, and international teams advancing neutrino detection and cosmic-ray physics.
