Mehmet Karabela is a Visiting Assistant Professor in Islamic Studies at the University of Rochester's Department of Religion and Classics. He holds a PhD from McGill University and has taught at Queen’s University in Canada, where he also served as a Senior Research Fellow. His research focuses on Islamic intellectual history, particularly the intersections between Islam and the Reformation, religion and politics, and political theology. He is the author of Islamic Thought Through Protestant Eyes (Routledge, 2022), shortlisted for the REFORC Book Award, and Mustafa Sabri Efendi (Opsi Press, 2021), a study of an Ottoman jurist.
Dr. Karabela’s academic journey includes roles at Queen’s University as Term Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, and Visiting Assistant Professor. His research has been supported by grants such as the Canada Council for the Arts and multiple Queen’s University awards. He has published widely in journals like Renaissance and Reformation and Journal of the History of Philosophy, and his work often explores themes like Ottoman literature, medieval theological debates, and the legacy of Islamic thinkers in modern contexts.
In addition to his scholarly contributions, Karabela directs the Canadian Institute for Multicultural Diplomacy and leads multimedia projects, including a documentary on Leonard Cohen. His teaching spans courses on Islam in the modern world, religious politics, and comparative religion. He has advised numerous graduate and undergraduate students on topics ranging from medieval Islamic theology to modern Middle Eastern cultural history.
