Dr. Cohen’s research interrogates decolonizing global media theories and research methods, advocating for diversified academic frameworks beyond Eurocentric paradigms. She analyzes media systems in non-democratic contexts and their potential to address human rights abuses and humanitarian crises. Her 2023 book, Press Freedom and the (Crooked) Path Toward Democracy: Lessons from Journalists in East Africa (Oxford University Press), expands these themes into empirical studies of East African journalism.
Her scholarly output appears in outlets such as the International Journal of Press/Politics, International Journal of Communication, and International Communication Gazette. A widely viewed TEDx talk (1.5+ million views) further disseminates her work on media’s role in social justice. Contact: mcohen003@regis.edu | 303.964.5458.
