Megan Maruschke is a Junior Professor for Global Studies at the Global and European Studies Institute, University of Leipzig since June 2022. She also serves as Deputy Director of the Graduate School Global and Area Studies and Head of the Examination Board for Global Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Philosophy. Additionally, she holds leadership positions in international academic organizations including the International Commission for the History of the French Revolution.
Dr. Maruschke's educational background includes:
- Dr. Phil. summa cum laude in Global Studies from Leipzig University (2012-2016)
- M.A. in Global Studies from Wrocław University and Leipzig University (2009-2011)
- B.A. in Global Studies and Italian Studies from University of California Santa Barbara (2005-2009)
- Study abroad in International Relations at University of Padua (2007-2008)
Her research focuses on global historical processes with particular attention to spatial organization, boundary formation, and mobility. Dr. Maruschke specializes in Border Studies since the 18th century, Free Ports and Special Economic Zones (19th-21st Centuries), French and American Imperial Histories, the Age of Revolutions, and Migration and Refugee History. Her current book project examines Philadelphia as a border town in the Early Republic US, investigating how refugee movements during the Age of Revolutions impacted boundary production and meaning.
Dr. Maruschke has been involved in significant research projects including 'The Respatialization of the World during the Formation of the Global Condition, 1820–1914' and 'Between Reforming the Empire and Nation State Territorialization: The Transatlantic Cycle of Revolution 1770–1830,' both funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. She serves on multiple academic committees and represents Leipzig University in international research collaborations.
Her research is conducted within the framework of the Global and European Studies Institute at Leipzig University, which provides an interdisciplinary environment for studying global processes and transformations. Dr. Maruschke collaborates with researchers across multiple institutions including the European University Institute and participates in the International Max Planck Research School 'Global Multiplicity.'
