Megan Laverty is a Professor of Philosophy and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. She holds affiliations with the Arts & Humanities School and the Philosophy and Education Department. Her academic journey includes a Master of Arts from the University of Melbourne and a Ph.D. from the University of New South Wales. Prior to joining Teachers College in 2005, she served as an Assistant Professor at Montclair State University.
Her research focuses on the history of philosophy of education, moral philosophy in education, and pre-college philosophy. She co-edited A History of Western Philosophy of Education (Bloomsbury, 2021) and collaborates on the Philosophy for Children Founders series. Key interests include children’s philosophical thinking, Socratic pedagogy, and the intersection of literature and ethics in education.
Dr. Laverty’s scholarly work spans articles on Iris Murdoch, J.M. Coetzee, and pragmatist philosophy. Her 2022 co-edited book on Gareth B. Matthews won the Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia Award. She contributes to academic governance as an Executive Board Member of the Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children (IAPC) and serves on international advisory boards.
Her doctoral advisees include scholars exploring racialized pedagogies, philosophy in education, and contemplative practices. Laverty’s teaching emphasizes philosophical dialogue and ethical inquiry, with a commitment to fostering critical thinking in educational contexts.
