Megan A. Winget

Megan A. Winget is a Teaching Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Information and Library Science (SILS). She specializes in digital preservation, digital repositories, and the representation of non-textual materials. Her work emphasizes collaborative technologies and the preservation of emerging media forms like video games and new media art.

Winget holds a BA from the University of Georgia, an MA in Art History from the University of Virginia, an MS in Information Science from SILS (1999), and a PhD in Information and Library Science from SILS (2006). Before joining UNC full-time, she taught at the University of Texas at Austin (2006–2013) and later worked as an independent consultant focusing on taxonomy development and big data applications.

Her research interests include digital curation, the preservation of new media artifacts, and the social implications of digital media consumption. She has published extensively on topics like video game preservation, social reading practices, and information retrieval systems. Notable awards include the IMLS Laura Bush Early Career Award (2008–2011) and the NSF Support Grant for doctoral consortium travel (2009–2010).

Winget teaches courses such as INLS 520 (Organization of Information), INLS 697 (Information Science Capstone), and INLS 754 (Access and Outreach in Cultural Heritage Repositories). Her consultancy work bridges academic research with industry applications, particularly in leveraging data for organizational efficiency.
