Associate Professor Meera Ashar holds a position at the School of Culture, History and Language, Australian National University (ANU). Previously, she served as Assistant Professor at City University of Hong Kong and as LM Singhvi Fellow at the University of Cambridge's Centre of South Asian Studies. She also directed ANU's South Asia Research Institute (SARI). Her research bridges history, political theory, and literary studies, focusing on colonial South Asia, postcolonialism, and the social history of colonial Gujarat through analyses of cultural texts like the novel Saraswatichandra.
Her work critiques colonial legacies and explores identity, nationalism, and legal histories. She has contributed to Modern Asian Studies, History and Theory, and other journals. Her award-winning documentary highlights cultural narratives, and she is fluent in multiple South Asian and European languages.
Research projects include 'Colonial Education in India and Hong Kong' and 'The 'Wonders' that Basham Saw,' examining cultural and historical intersections. She is engaged in global research partnerships through initiatives like the Sambrani Project.
