Mayank Varia is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Computing and Data Sciences at Boston University, where he also serves as Director of Undergraduate Studies and Civic Tech Hub Director. He holds a PhD in Mathematics from MIT (2010). His research focuses on the computational and social aspects of cryptography, emphasizing privacy-preserving data analysis for societal issues like economic inequality, minority business subcontracting, and sexual misconduct reporting. He actively contributes to policy through roles in the U.S. Advisory Committee on Data for Evidence Building and the United Nations Privacy-Preserving Techniques Task Team.
Research interests span secure multiparty computation, cryptographic protocols for privacy, and ethical data use. His work addresses legal and technical challenges in balancing privacy with compliance, notably through tools like Callisto for detecting serial misconduct. Recent articles highlight advancements in secure cloud analytics, exposure notification systems, and policy frameworks for encryption.
