Maya Tolstoy is a Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Her research focuses on marine geophysics, particularly seafloor earthquakes and volcanoes. She has led 18 research expeditions as Chief or co-Chief Scientist and published over 60 peer-reviewed articles in journals like Science and Nature.
She has secured over $22 million in federal grants, including leading the Ocean Bottom Seismology National Facility and the Cascadia Initiative. Tolstoy has also held leadership roles, such as Interim Executive Vice President of Arts and Sciences at Columbia (2018–2019).
Her education includes a BSc in Geophysics from the University of Edinburgh and a PhD from Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Awards include the Wings Worldquest Sea Award and being a NASA Astronaut finalist. Her work integrates geophysical data with machine learning to improve volcanic eruption forecasting and ocean monitoring.
