Maya Soetoro-Ng

Maya Soetoro-Ng serves as an Associate Specialist at the Matsunaga Institute for Peace at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Her work bridges academia with community engagement, emphasizing peace education, leadership development, and social justice. She previously taught Social Studies in secondary schools and later instructed educators at the College of Education before transitioning to her current role.

Research & Community Focus: Dr. Soetoro-Ng specializes in leadership for social change, peace movements, and the intersection of climate and peace. She collaborates with organizations like the Obama Foundation to develop leadership programs in the Asia Pacific and leads initiatives such as the Hawaiʻi Girls Opportunity Alliance. Her work emphasizes community action plans for restorative justice, environmental stewardship, and youth empowerment through art and journalism.

Community Engagement: She volunteers with Hui Aloha to support houseless communities and advocates for ʻaina-based learning. Through Ceeds of Peace, the Peace Studio, and USIP, she facilitates dialogue and healing in communities, integrating peacebuilding with practical solutions.

Academic Leadership: As Graduate Chair at the Matsunaga Institute, she mentors students in conflict resolution and oversees the Practicum program, connecting UH students with community organizations.
