Dr. Maya Eichler is an Associate Professor in Political Studies, Economics, Canadian Studies, and Women’s Studies at Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU). She directs the Centre for Social Innovation and Community Engagement in Military Affairs (SICEMA) and co-directs the Department of National Defence-funded Transforming Military Cultures (TMC) network. Her research focuses on gender in the military, military sexual violence, veteran transitions, and defense policy. She holds a PhD from York University and has held postdoctoral fellowships at institutions like Harvard Kennedy School.
Her work emphasizes social justice and citizen engagement, with notable publications including Militarizing Men: Gender, Conscription, and War in Post-Soviet Russia (2012) and Gender and Private Security in Global Politics (2015). She has received awards such as the 2021 J.E. Hodgetts Award for her article on military sexual assault cases. Dr. Eichler teaches courses on gender, international relations, and Canadian foreign policy.
Her articles explore themes like military culture reform, veteran mental health, and gender equity in defense policy. She serves on editorial boards for journals like the International Feminist Journal of Politics and engages in community initiatives like the Speaking Up project documenting Nova Scotia’s war and peace narratives.
