May Sumbwanyambe is an Assistant Professor in Creative Writing and English at Northumbria University, with prior roles as a Teaching Fellow at the University of Edinburgh (2018-2019) and Associate Lecturer at Edinburgh Napier University (2016-2019). She holds an LLB from Leeds Beckett University, an MA in Opera Making from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (as a Hedley Trust Scholar), and is pursuing a PhD on Black History Plays at the University of York. Her research focuses on colonialism, slavery, and African diaspora narratives through theatre and creative writing.
Key awards include the 2022 Best New Play Awards, 2024 Scottish Society of Playwrights Fellowship, and multiple residencies including Northumbria University’s Writer in Residence (2018). Her plays like Enough Of Him and Joseph Knight explore historical injustices, while recent works include commissions for the Citizens Theatre and Royal National Theatre.
Her academic contributions span guest lectures at Glasgow, St Andrews, and other universities, alongside over a decade of new writing tutoring for major theatres like the Royal Court and National Theatre of Scotland. She is a prominent figure in reimagining Black history through performance and literature.
