Maxine Whelan is an Assistant Professor at Coventry University's Centre for Healthcare and Communities. She holds an honorary affiliation with Coventry City Council and has collaborated extensively with Warwickshire County Council and Coventry City Council on public health initiatives. Her research focuses on digital health technologies, behavior change, and women's health, particularly during menopause and diabetes prevention. She leads the Coventry Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC), aiming to establish sustainable research infrastructure in local government.
Whelan earned a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science from Loughborough University (2011–2014) and a PhD in Physical Activity and Public Health (2014–2018). She has led multiple projects, including evaluations of COPD self-management tools, digital health interventions, and homeless health services. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing health equity and community impact.
Her research interests include supported self-management, physical activity promotion, and the application of digital tools for health monitoring. Recent projects explore ecotherapy for adolescents, e-cigarette use in pregnancy, and interventions targeting midlife women's health.
Whelan has received funding awards, including the 2022 Research Excellence Development Funding Award for grant development. Her 35+ publications span topics like COPD self-management apps, hypertension screening, and glucose monitoring technologies.
