Prof. Max Witjes is a professor at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Groningen, affiliated with the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). He leads research in the Innovative Clinical Studies and Long-term Treatment Consequences in Cancer (InClinS) and Basic and Translational Research and Imaging Methodology Development in Groningen (BRIDGE) groups. His work focuses on head and neck cancer, radiation therapy outcomes, bone and soft tissue necrosis, and implant development for reconstructive surgery.
Research outputs include over 230 peer-reviewed publications, with recent work on PEEK implants for mandibular defects, speech changes post-cancer surgery, and international consensus guidelines on osteoradionecrosis. He has presented at professional conferences and contributed to media discussions on 3D technology in medicine and NIH-funded fluorescence-assisted surgery projects.
His research addresses UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health equity and innovation. Supervised 17 research projects and actively collaborates internationally on cancer treatment consequences and imaging methodologies.
