Dr. Max Töpper is a Senior Lecturer and Privatdozent at the Faculty of Psychology and Sport Science, University of Bielefeld, and is affiliated with the Department of Psychology, Unit 11 - Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy. He also holds a position at the University Hospital OWL, Evangelical Hospital Bethel, within the University Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, where he leads the Working Group on Aging and Cognitive Neuroscience. Additionally, he is a member of the Ethics Commission of Bielefeld University and affiliated with the Medical Faculty OWL.
His research focuses on neurocognitive changes in aging, dementia, driving safety in neurological and psychiatric populations, symbol comprehension in cognitive disorders, and sport-related concussions. His work bridges clinical neuropsychology with cognitive neuroscience, emphasizing functional outcomes such as driving fitness and daily living abilities.
The most recent publications highlight his contributions to assessing driving safety in older adults and those with mild cognitive impairment, understanding symbol processing across neurodegenerative and affective disorders, and differentiating normal aging from Alzheimer’s disease. His research is supported by German Research Foundation (DFG) projects on driving aptitude diagnostics and symbol processing in aging.
