Max Shulman is an Assistant Professor of Theatre in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS). His research focuses on 19th and early 20th-century American theater, particularly the intersection of theater and national identity formation. Current projects include the history of drug addiction representation on the U.S. stage and the revival of archival theatrical works.
Education: Ph.D. in Drama (Tufts University, 2016), M.A. in Theatre History (Hunter College, 2010), B.S. in Performance and B.A. in English (Northwestern University, 2003).
Research interests span radio drama, vaudeville, political theatre, Yiddish theatre, and Eastern performance traditions such as Japanese Noh and Kabuki, as well as Indian Kuttiyatam and Kathakali. He has professional experience as a director and dramaturge, including a residency at the Center for Jewish History in New York until 2016.
Teaching emphasizes both Western and Eastern performance traditions, and his work often integrates historical scholarship with contemporary performance practices. Conference presentations address topics like the actor-addict archetype in popular culture, race in radio drama, and the socio-political dimensions of theatrical performance.
