Dr. Max Liboiron (Michif-settler) is a Professor of Geography at Memorial University of Newfoundland, where they founded and direct the Civic Laboratory for Environmental Action Research (CLEAR). Their work develops anticolonial, feminist methodologies for environmental science.
Research pioneers discard studies as an interdisciplinary field examining waste systems as expressions of power. Seminal works include Pollution Is Colonialism (Duke Press) and Discard Studies (MIT Press), which establish frameworks for understanding pollution through land relations and settler colonialism. Current projects include Indigenous participation in plastics governance, justice models in pollution science, and water rematriation.
CLEAR's innovations include community peer review protocols, authorship equity practices, and open-source hardware like the BabyLegs marine plastic trawl. Dr. Liboiron has shaped global initiatives including the Global Open Science Hardware movement.
Leadership: Former Associate Vice-President (Indigenous Research) at Memorial University and co-director of the IndigeLab Network for Indigenous research methodologies.
