Maurizio Benelli is an Adjunct Professor in Applied BioSciences at Macquarie University. He holds a PhD in Agricultural Entomology (Macquarie University & University of Bologna), MRes in Agricultural Sciences (University of Bologna), and a BS in Agricultural Sciences (Universita della Tuscia). His external roles include Researcher at the University of Bologna (2017), Research Officer at University of the Azores (2014), and other visiting positions. He specializes in applied entomology, focusing on cold storage technologies for insect mass rearing, in-vitro techniques for entomophagous insects, and quality control protocols. His research aims to develop innovative pest control strategies using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to suppress pest populations below economic thresholds.
- Education:
- PhD: Agricultural Entomology, Macquarie University & University of Bologna
- MRes: Agricultural Sciences, University of Bologna
- BS: Agricultural Sciences, Universita della Tuscia
Research interests include optimizing insect rearing through cold storage, dietary supplements (e.g., methoprene, raspberry ketone), and stress resilience. His work addresses challenges in sterile insect technique (SIT) and post-production stress effects on fruit flies. He has presented at multiple conferences and received awards for oral and poster presentations. His articles focus on topics like cold storage applications, dietary supplements, and pest management strategies.
- Key Awards:
- Best Oral Presentation Runner Up (2015)
- Best Poster Presentation (2016)
Activities include talks on cold storage optimization for dipterans and presentations on post-production stressors. Media coverage highlights his work on fruit fly mortality due to rough handling and contributions to pest control research.
