Mauricio Nascimento is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Statistics at The Pennsylvania State University, part of the Eberly College of Science. He earned his Ph.D. in Statistics from Penn State in 2020 and a bachelor's degree in Statistics from the Federal University of Parana in 2012. His research focuses on spatial extremes, semi-parametric spectral density estimation, and high-dimensional Gaussian process approximations, with applications to environmental risk assessment and fire threat modeling. He was an invited speaker at the 2016 STATMOS Workshop on Climate Extremes and received the 2018 Award for Support of Pedagogy in Undergraduate Instruction.
He teaches a broad range of statistics courses, including foundational courses like STAT 100, STAT 200, and advanced topics such as Applied Bayesian Analysis (STAT 497) and Data Science (STAT 380). His teaching portfolio spans both undergraduate and graduate levels, emphasizing statistical reasoning and computational methods.
Key research contributions include developing faster approximations for high-dimensional Gaussian CDFs and analyzing spatial relationships in multivariate extremes. His work bridges theoretical advancements with practical applications in environmental science and education.
