Professor Maurice N. Collins serves as Professor of Materials Science and Head of Research and Innovation in the School of Engineering at the University of Limerick. He concurrently holds leadership positions as Pillar Lead at the Bernal Institute, Principal Investigator at the Health Research Institute, Future Innovator at SFI AMBER (Trinity College Dublin), and Challenge Lead in SFI Biorbic (University College Dublin), with research spanning sustainable materials and biomedical applications.
His educational foundation includes a Doctor of Philosophy (awarded 2007) and Master of Science (awarded 2002). Research focuses on Materials Science and Engineering with specialized expertise in hydrogels, polymers, sustainable carbon materials, lignin, and hyaluronic acid. His regenerative medicine work integrates tissue mechanics, cell/matrix interactions, and scaffold design, notably advancing biobased carbon fiber through the H2020 LIBRE consortium—the largest European initiative in this field.
Recent publications (2024-2025) reveal a dominant trend toward lignin-derived sustainable materials, with hydrogels engineered for energy harvesting and cartilage regeneration. He leads integrated research ecosystems across the Bernal Institute, Health Research Institute, and SFI centers, driving consortia focused on biobased materials (BIONEER, CUBIC) and sustainable manufacturing. Current work prioritizes scaling lignin-to-carbon-fiber processes and developing 3D-printable polymers for medical devices, with strong industry-academia translation pathways.
