Maurice Crul is a Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, affiliated with the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Identities, Diversity and Inclusion (IDI) research group. His work focuses on education, migration, and urban diversity, particularly the integration of second-generation immigrants and superdiverse cities. He has led major international projects like TIES (European Second Generation Study) and the ERC-funded Becoming a Minority (BAM) project, exploring the experiences of people without migration backgrounds in ethnically diverse urban areas. His research emphasizes pathways to success among disadvantaged groups and the evolving dynamics of diversity in global cities.
Crul has held prestigious grants, including two ERC grants (Advanced 2017 and Consolidator 2011), and has published over 140 works. His books include The Changing Face of World Cities (2012) and De nieuwe minderheid (2023). He collaborates widely across Europe and North America, addressing policy challenges in education, labor markets, and urban inclusion.
Key areas of focus include: migration policies, refugee education, interethnic tensions in urban spaces, and the paradoxes of diversity attitudes. His work bridges theory and practice, influencing both academic discourse and public policy on integration and social cohesion.
