Maura Ryan serves as Vice President and Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs at the University of Notre Dame since 2015, holding the John Cardinal O'Hara, CSC Associate Professor of Christian Ethics position in the Department of Theology within the College of Arts and Letters. She became a Kellogg Institute Faculty Fellow in 2023 after previously serving as Associate Provost (2001-2004) and Associate Dean for Humanities and Faculty Affairs in the College of Arts and Letters (2008-2015).
Her research focuses on bioethics and health policy, women's health and development, and Catholic Social Teaching. Ryan explores critical intersections between medical practice, ethical frameworks, and theological perspectives, particularly regarding end-of-life care, reproductive technologies, and global health disparities. Her work consistently examines how religious traditions inform contemporary ethical dilemmas in medicine and public policy.
Recent publications reveal evolving focus on pandemic ethics and systemic healthcare inequalities, with 2022's Tragic Choices, Revisited analyzing COVID-19 rationing protocols through Catholic ethical lenses. Earlier works like Good Deaths, "Stupid Deaths" (2016) established her signature approach connecting liturgical practices to medical solidarity.
