Mattias Åhrén is a Visiting Professor at the Department of Law of the University of Luxembourg. He holds a PhD from UiT – The Arctic University of Norway (2010) and was qualified as a Professor there in 2016. His research focuses on indigenous peoples’ rights, Sámi rights, public international law, and human rights. He has authored influential monographs like Indigenous Peoples’ Status in the International Legal System (OUP, 2016) and contributes to edited works including the Oxford Handbook of Indigenous Peoples in International Law (2024).
His legal expertise spans landmark cases such as the Norwegian Supreme Court’s Fosen ruling (2001), the Swedish Supreme Court’s Girjas case (2020), and the Rönnbäcken case before the UN CERD (2020), where he argued systemic discrimination against Sámi reindeer herders. He has advised on UN initiatives including the 2007 Declaration on Indigenous Rights and the Nordic Sámi Convention negotiations (2005).
Current projects include the Human Rights Law in the Nordic Countries (2024–2027), focusing on regional legal frameworks. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals addressing inequality and environmental justice.
