Mattias Nowak is a Lecturer and Director of Studies at Lund University's Centre for Languages and Literature, specializing in European Studies and Central and Eastern European Studies. He coordinates the Master’s Programme in European Studies and teaches courses like Introduction to European Studies: Culture, Identity, History and The Meaning of Europe: Culture, Values and Identity.
Research Interests focus on:
- Political philosophies of conservatism and nationalism in Europe (Poland, Spain, UK)
- Traditionalist discourse in Polish politics critical of liberal/secular European integration
- Comparative history of conservatism in Europe and the US
- Concepts of collective memory and national identity
- Yiddish culture in Eastern Europe
- Inter-religious dialogue in Poland and Belarus
His publications highlight conservative political ideologies and their cultural clashes in Europe, with case studies on Poland's paleoconservative values, historical debates on WWII expulsions, and Eastern European political systems. He is actively involved in administrative roles, including membership on the Board of Section 5 at the Centre for Languages and Literature.
