Mattias Lorentzon is a Professor and Program Leader of the Bone Health and Fractures Research Program at the Mary Mackillop Institute for Health Research, Australian Catholic University (ACU), Melbourne. He is also affiliated with the University of Gothenburg, Sahlgrenska University Hospital (Sweden), Australian Institute of Musculoskeletal Science (AIMSS), and Western Health. His work bridges clinical geriatric medicine and translational bone research.
His research focuses on osteoporosis, fracture epidemiology, bone microstructure, fracture prediction, probiotics and bone metabolism, and the genetics of skeletal health. He has pioneered work using high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) to assess bone quality and has contributed to the development of FRAX, a globally used tool for fracture risk assessment. His current work includes advancing FRAXII and investigating the gut-bone axis via probiotic interventions.
His recent publications reveal a strong trend in clinical and population-based studies on bone fragility, with emphasis on fracture risk prediction, bone material properties, interventional therapies (e.g., romosozumab, alendronate), and metabolic influences (diabetes, bariatric surgery, probiotics). These works span top journals such as JAMA, NEJM, The Lancet, and Nature.
Notable scientific awards include:
- ASBMR/ECTS Clinical Debate Golden Femur Award (Rome, 2016)
- Eric K. Fernström Prize for Young Researchers (Sweden, 2014)
He has received substantial external funding from agencies including the National Swedish Research Council (since 2005) and has led or participated in multiple randomized trials. Although listed as an HDR supervisor, his accreditation status is currently 'Not accredited'. He serves on review panels for major journals (e.g., NEJM, J Bone Miner Res) and grant agencies (Arthritis Research UK, SSMF), and actively engages in public outreach via social media.
He is involved in several collaborative research networks, including the FRAX research group (University of Sheffield), the Bone Microarchitecture International Consortium (BoMIC), and the SUNLIGHT consortium. His research team has operated in both Sweden and Australia, with ongoing international collaborations.
