Mattia Acetoso is an Associate Professor of Italian and Graduate Program Director at Boston College's Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. His research focuses on modern Italian poetry and music, the literature of exile, contemporary cinema, and magical realism. He holds a PhD from Yale University (2012), with earlier degrees from the University of Bologna and Yale.
Acetoso's work bridges literary analysis and music studies, exemplified by his book Echoes of Opera in Modern Italian Poetry: Eros, Tragedy, and National Identity (2020). His articles explore themes like Renato Poggioli's exile, Carlo Levi's temporal narratives, and Umberto Saba's musical influences. He has presented at major conferences including NEMLA, ACLA, and the American Association of Italian Studies, covering topics from Antonio Tabucchi's existentialism to Verdi's patriotism.
Acetoso's research also extends to Italian cinema, analyzing films like Gomorra and political biopics. His translations include Francesco Cavalli's opera libretto Orion and Joseph Luzzi's Romantic Europe and the Ghost of Italy. His interdisciplinary approach combines textual analysis with historical and cultural contexts, emphasizing the interplay between Italian literature, music, and visual arts.
