Dr. Matthijs S. Berends is a medical epidemiologist and microbiologist at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), Faculty of Medical Sciences, working within the Cure and Care in the Community Context (FOUR-C) research group. He holds a PhD from the University of Groningen and maintains dual appointments at UMCG's Department of Primary Care Medicine and Certe Medical Diagnostics and Advice Foundation.
His research focuses on innovative applications of data science in microbial epidemiology, particularly in antimicrobial resistance analysis and COVID-19 prediction modeling. Dr. Berends has developed widely adopted analytical methods used in 175 countries with over 85,000 downloads, reflecting significant global impact in his field.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong trajectory in applying machine learning to primary care challenges, with multiple 2025 publications examining post-COVID syndrome, hand hygiene compliance, urinary tract infection management, and prenatal care disruptions.
