His educational credentials include:
- M.S. in Architecture from Delft University of Technology (1995)
Bouw's research pioneers the integration of design as a collaborative tool across disciplines to address urban resilience, water management, and energy transition challenges. He focuses on maximizing 'resilience value' in complex projects through nature-based solutions, as demonstrated in his book 'Building with Nature' and leadership in climate adaptation frameworks worldwide.
His firm's landmark achievement includes winning the Rebuild by Design competition for Manhattan flood protection, with ongoing execution of major initiatives like the East Side Coastal Resiliency Project and Lower Manhattan Coastal Protection.
- Rebuild by Design Competition Winner
At Penn, Bouw teaches 'Design with Risk' and 'Public Health, Cities and the Climate Crisis' seminars alongside the 'urban resilience studio,' extending his pedagogical influence through prior guest professorships at TU Delft, RWTH Aachen, and Sci-Arc.
One Architecture and Urbanism operates globally across North America and Asia, implementing climate-resilient urban developments like Amsterdam-Havenstad and advising institutions including the World Bank through innovative 'building with nature' methodologies.
