Matthias Vorwerk, PhD, serves as Provost and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Dallas. Previously, he held academic leadership roles including Associate Dean of the School of Philosophy at the Catholic University of America and post-doctoral fellowships at Trinity College Dublin. His expertise spans ancient philosophy, particularly Plato and Plotinus, with a focus on Neoplatonism and the philosophy of human nature. He earned a PhD in Greek and Latin Philology and Philosophy from the University of Münster (1998), following a B.A. in 1994 from the same institution.
Research interests include Platonic dialogues, Neoplatonic exegesis, and the interplay between myth and cosmology in ancient thought. His publications explore topics such as Plotinian metaphysics, ancient concepts of citizenship, and comparative ethics between Platonism and Stoicism. Dr. Vorwerk has authored/co-authored four books in German and numerous articles, and serves on the Board of Directors of American Friends of the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation.
His career highlights include developing a new liberal arts curriculum at Catholic University and overseeing undergraduate education for seminarians. Married with three children, he maintains a dual focus on administrative leadership and scholarly contributions to ancient philosophy.
