Matthias Pierce is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Women’s Mental Health within the Division of Psychology and Mental Health, Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health at the University of Manchester. His research centers on understanding how family dynamics shape mental health and illness through large-scale observational datasets and advanced biostatistical methodologies including causal inference, longitudinal modeling, and network analysis.
Education
- PhD from University of Manchester (2016)
- MSc in Medical Statistics from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (2008)
- BSc in Physics and Philosophy from King's College London (2005)
His expertise spans children and young people's mental health, prison mental health, pandemic impacts, perinatal epidemiology, and substance misuse. Recent work demonstrates strong focus on culturally adapted interventions for South Asian communities in the UK and Pakistan, with significant contributions to postnatal depression treatment and adolescent self-harm prevention. His methodological approach integrates cohort studies, randomized controlled trials, and complex data modeling to address critical public health challenges.
Current research trends reveal emphasis on economic evaluations of mental health interventions, cross-national implementation studies, and family-level network analyses of mental health symptoms. His 2025 publications highlight methodological rigor in evaluating psychological interventions while addressing health disparities in marginalized populations.
Scientific Awards
- Wellcome Trust Sir Henry Dale Fellowship
Dr. Pierce has secured competitive funding through the Wellcome Trust and contributed to impactful projects including the ROSHNI-2 trial for postnatal depression and the National History of Problem Drug User Offending study. His work influences mental health policy across the UK, Europe, and USA, particularly in perinatal care and substance misuse treatment. He actively collaborates with international research networks and contributes to the University of Manchester's Healthier Futures and Digital Futures research platforms.
As a core member of the Centre for Women’s Mental Health, he participates in multidisciplinary teams advancing data science applications in mental health research through the Institute for Data Science and AI. His current projects focus on longitudinal family mental health dynamics and culturally responsive interventions in diverse populations.
