Matthias J. Ehrhardt is Reader at the University of Bath's Department of Mathematical Sciences, Deputy Director of the EPSRC Mathematics for Deep Learning program, and head of the Bath Imaging Group. His research integrates optimization, inverse problems, and machine learning for applications in medical imaging and computational biology.
Education includes PhD in Medical Imaging from UCL (2015) and MSc in Industrial Mathematics from University of Bremen (2012). Research develops stochastic optimization methods for large-scale inverse problems, with clinical translation in PET/CT reconstruction and neuroimaging.
Key interests span variational methods, bilevel learning, and structure-preserving neural networks. Recent work focuses on uncertainty quantification and physics-informed learning for dynamic imaging.
Awards:
- Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship (2020-2023)
- Institute of Physics Outstanding Reviewer Award (2019)
Leads the Bath Imaging Group with 4 postdoctoral researchers and 6 PhD students. Secured £1.3M in personal grants including EPSRC projects on PET++ reconstruction and deep learning mathematics.
