Matthias Henze serves as the Isla Carroll and Percy E. Turner Professor of Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism at Rice University. He is the founder and current director of Rice's Jewish Studies program.
Henze earned his M.Div. in Protestant Theology from the University of Heidelberg and his Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism from Harvard University's Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations.
His research focuses on Hebrew Bible, Early Judaism, Biblical Interpretation, Jewish Apocalypticism, and Pseudepigrapha. Henze has made significant contributions to understanding Jewish writings between the Old and New Testaments and their relevance for understanding early Christianity. His scholarly work shows consistent expertise in textual analysis, historical context, and theological interpretation of ancient Jewish texts.
His publications demonstrate specialization in Second Temple Judaism, biblical interpretation in ancient contexts, and the religious world that shaped early Christianity.
