Dr. Matthias Eggel is a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Humanities, University of Basel. He holds dual PhDs in Molecular Biology & Biochemistry (University of Bern, 2015) and Animal Ethics (University of Zurich/Vienna, 2018) and specializes in ethics of animal research, gene editing, and biomedical ethics.

His research focuses on Animal Research Ethics and Gene Editing Ethics, with particular emphasis on harm-benefit analysis, the 3Rs principle, genetic disenhancement, and regulatory frameworks for animal experimentation. Recent work compares European regulations for animal research authorization and critiques ethical justification models.
Dr. Eggel serves on Switzerland's National Ethics Committee in Animal Experimentation (SAMW) and the Cantonal Animal Research Review Committee in Fribourg. He teaches Animal Ethics courses to Life Science, Veterinary, Medical, and transdisciplinary students.
