Matthias Deuschle is a Private Lecturer (Privatdozent) at the Protestant Theological Faculty of the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen since 2018. He completed his Habilitation at the same institution in 2018 with a thesis on Ernst Wilhelm Hengstenberg. Previously, he served as Pastor in Herrenberg-Kuppingen from 2011-2020 and held an Acting Chair position at Humboldt University of Berlin in 2010. His academic career includes research assistantships at Humboldt University of Berlin (2004-2010) and ecclesiastical assistant work at the University of Tübingen (2001-2003).
His educational background includes passing the first Protestant Theological Service Examination in 1998, for which he was awarded the Dr. Leopold Lucas Young Scientist Prize of the Eberhard Karls University the same year.
Dr. Deuschle's research spans multiple specialized areas of theological and church history. His primary interests include Theology and Church History of the 16th Century, History of the Reformation in southwest Germany, Calvin and Calvinism, History of theology of the 19th century, Theological party formation and milieus in the 19th century, and the Revival movement. His scholarship demonstrates particular expertise in conservative strands within 19th-century Prussian church history, as evidenced by his habilitation thesis on Ernst Wilhelm Hengstenberg.
His scholarly output reveals a strong emphasis on regional church history, particularly focusing on Brandenburg and Württemberg, with significant contributions to understanding Reformation commemoration throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. His work bridges historical analysis with theological reflection, especially in examining religious authority, church discipline, and church-state relations.
